Financing
With any worthy project, money must be found. We all know that Freedom isn't free, as this memorial makes obvious. However, it is the objective of the Freedom Bridge Committee that this entire project will not be any additional financial burden to our city. To repeat, we expect that the revenues associated with all the aspects of the Freedom Bridge should make this entire project self sustaining.
Potential revenue sources are numerous and are all being considered.
- Bridge tolls may be implemented, using many of the new electronic collections methods available. Obviously, there would be discounts to local residents, as compared to tolls charged to visitors. There may also be a sliding scale of tolls for sizes of vehicles or trailers. Recent traffic studies demonstrate that tolls may provide the majority of the estimated costs for the entire project.
- In addition, sales of memorial bricks are being considered and have proven very successful for other projects around the country.
- Corporate sponsorships are being solicited for several of the components of this project. A hi-tech video marquee over the Channel which can be used for both advertising and community announcements may also be included.
- Island Development Fees are expected to be a significant source of financing, although extended over many years.
- Contribution from Veterans organizations will be sought.
- Grants from Federal and State organizations are being pursued.
- Private long term financing or project bonding will be considered.
- Lease revenues of surrounding space to civic and other organizations such as the Convention and Visitor's Bureau and Armed Forces recruiting centers will add to the funding.
- We expect to have charitable donations and conduct new fund raising events.
All and more are possible sources of revenue for the Freedom Bridge project. Most important is that the Freedom Bridge Committee is welcoming all public opinions and input during the progress of this monumental undertaking. Please stay tuned for upcoming opportunities to contribute your ideas. |
