Greetings Tim!
For the remainder of this month, we will be focusing on heart-healthy foods to celebrate American Heart Month. Oh, we'll still have all of our regular goodies, too, but we'll have some special deals on our produce pals that promote a healthy heart! So this week I did my homework and looked up the healthy heart chart toppers... It goes something like this, they vary from source to source, but these are the most recommended. I bold-faced the items we have at the fsarmstand when available, most of these are here this week:
salmon
olive oil
apples
almonds
green leafy vegetables
tomatoes
flax seed
black or kidney beans
tuna
brown rice
red bell peppers (price doubled this week, but we have the mini mixed vasriety)
asparagus
oranges
cantalope (out of season, you don't want the conventional ones out of Chile, very toxic!)
papaya
dark chocolate
Now here's something I thought was really informative. I went to the website of the American heart Assoc. and found a list of the TOP TEN THINGS YOU CAN DO TO IMPROVE YOUR HEART HEALTH:
1. Know and limit your fats.
2. Choose lean meats and poultry w/o skin and prepare
w/o added saturated and trans fats.
3. Eat at least 2 servings of fish each week.
4. Select fat-tree, 1%, and low fat dairy products.
5. Cut back or eliminate trans fats and hydrogenated veg. oils.
6. Decrease foods high in dietary cholesterol.
7. Decrease foods and beverages with added sugar.
8. Choose and prepare foods with little or no salt.
9. Increase fiber and oat bran.
10. Read labels!
Well that should be enough to get you all started, if you're not on board already!
