Here's what's organically cookin' at
 "A Place To Be" Bistro

In addition to his standing order salad creations with our romaine lettuce, baby spinach, carrots, and cucumbers dressed with his signature fresh herb infusions,
look for something special made with cauliflower this week!
I asked him to make us some mashed cauliflower on the side.
He's also ordered up a case of our delicious
gold pineapples, no telling what he'll do with those, but save some for me, ok?

Greetings Everyone!

Last month we focused on heart health.   This month we're celebrating "National Heart Month(r)"  which is a trademarked nutrition education and information campaign created annually in March by the American Dietetic Association.  In fact, the theme for this year is "Nutrition From the Ground Up."  Well imagine that, isn't this what organic produce is all about?
Seems to me, we celebrate good nutrition, healthy hearts, and creative ideas every month, every week up here at the farmstand, I love it!

You can find a lot of great helpful information on their website

Here are some tips I found:
Focus on fruits and vegetables (fresh, organic, of course!)

Visit a farmer's market, which makes a fun family outing, too.  (We are here every Friday and Saturday.  Some moms make it a routine to bring the kids up after school every Friday, look for Amanda with her little Hula Hoopers!

Let kids pick out some new foods to try. (It helps if you bring them in when they are hungry, like after a Saturday game, they can eat something fresh!)

Make your calories count... make sure you're getting some vitamins and nutrients out of the deal.
For example, instead of eating ice cream, make some sorbet in your blender with fresh frozen fruit like strawberries, bananas, mangoes, and pineapple.

Test your tastebuds.  Add new foods to your meals and snacks.

Try a new recipe, you might find a new healthy favorite!

Plan ahead, make a grocery list and plan 5-6 meals/week, including a night with left overs (my friend refers to them as "musgoes" because this stuff "must go" or it will go to waste!)
And stick to the plan!

Find new recipes.  (I like to create them)

Many leading nutrition experts will tell you to eat more raw organic produce and less grains and sugar.  I heard it said once that "You should avoid eating anything with a bar code on it."
That means wholesome and natural, not processed.
Guaranteed, anything at the farmstand in a package with a bar code is going to be a good  for you, we do rigorous screening for nutritional terrorists so you don't have to worry!

Finally, remember, it's not just healthy eating, but an active, balanced lifestyle needed for optimal wellness.
Let's get moving, the weather has been great!

PRODUCE IN THE NEWS...
To flavor up all of your fresh veggies this week we are featuring an assortment of fresh herbs, including basil, thyme, and for the first time, we're expecting some oregano.  I've never used fresh oregano before, old dog, new trick?
Some other stuff we invited back to the farmstand for the occasion includes bunched beets, cilantro, eggplant, lacinato kale (gotta love those homemade kale chips!), green butter lettuce, portabella mushrooms, radishes, zucchini, and we are finally expecting a nice batch of green beans!
Oh this is making me hungry... I'm thinking about veggies on the BBQ.
That's the recipe of the week, "Shake-n-Grill Veggies".  I got this from my neighbor, Andy W, when he and his family came over for some q-ing one evening.  He fixed it for us here, ummm, and so easy!  It's been one of our favorites ever since.
For those of you who prefer a little Mexican flair, I also added a "Fajita Marinade."  You can saute or grill your veggies with this as well.
For a nutricious dessert, look out for our fresh picked blueberries and strawberries. Just a reminder, in case you have not tried them lately, our tropical mangoes and pineapples have been divinely delicious... and so good for you, too!

This is a tough time of year in produce world, as we transition from one season to another.  Some of our winter veggies begin to wind down, while the summer fruits are just beginning to grow.  Yes, you can find some of that stuff coming out of Chile and other parts of South America on the conventional, non-organic market, but it has to travel long distance, for a long time, be harvested quite unripe, and it's loaded with toxic pesticides.  You won't be doing your body any favors with that stuff!
