Greetings Members!

Week three of National Nutrition Month(r) brings us to the first day of  SPRING!  Oh this is one of my favorite times of the year, as the desert comes to life with wildflowers (and that no-touch scorpion weed), the weather warms up, and the days grow longer.  Lots of things are beginning to grow out there... like our FOOD!  Last Friday, I met Ann Cooper, the "Renegade Lunch Lady."  In her presentation, she told us all to feed our children FOOD and teach them about nutrition.  She elaborated, "Know where your food comes from.  Food has a place and a face, not a box!"  Food colors and additives cause ADD/ADHD, 70.1% of Americans are overweight, and 4.3 million kids 10-14 years old will become obese within the next year.  Food companies in America spend $17-20 BILLION on advertising food.  The avg. person spends $500 on unhealthy food for evry $1 on healthy food.  (source, Ann Cooper and the CDC)

Well here at the OPG Farmstand, we can make a difference in our families! I encourage you to share this news with at least one friend this week.   Then who wants to join me in an effort to change our school lunch program?  Kids need good food to learn better... and it CAN BE DONE, even in this economy.

Stay tuned for more EXPO updates...

PRODUCE IN THE NEWS...
Winter harvest is about finished up in Yuma and the Coachella Valley and is moving on to California now for cooler temps and a better climate for growing.  As in the Fall, this transition brings with it supply/demand issues as we wait for the new harvest to come in.  This year has been particularly brutal with all those freezing conditions back East.  Well we still have the goods at least! Expect to see some "Fall fresh" crispy gala apples coming on a ship from New Zealand within the next month.  Then summer fruits will be right around the corner.
The berries and tropical fruits have been fabulous, we continue to bring in an ample supply of quality lettuces, and potatoes/yams have been a great deal.
Back from the bench this week, we're expecting some bunched beets, pistachios, and regular tomatoes weighing in at 1/2lb each!  That's a good size tomato.  Seems there was some big issue on the Roma tomato farms and the entire crop was lost.  That resulted in a nonexistent supply of fresh Romas, high pricing on cherry tomatoes, but we scored a deal on the big ones.  I was about ready for that anyway.  Word is they are going to be beauties.
New to the plate we will have some big berry tea to compliment the new organic cranberry juice we test marketed last week.  We also ordered some Steaz berry energy drinks to get you going, and how about some HOT salsa to spice it up?
