Greetings!

Ahhh, Spring is in the air, our desert is greening up, and it's 'Spring Break" time in Havasu... but it's a BUSY place up here at the Farmstand as we wrap up our celebration of "National Nutrition Month(r)."  Of course, we celebrate with healthy food EVERY  Friday and Saturday up here, but this month we're making an extra effort to spread the word about good nutrition.
Many thanks to those of you who stepped up to the "plate" and offered to help with our healthy school lunch campaign.  If you would like to participate, please send me a quick email to organicproducegals@hotmail.com with your name, phone #, and the school your child(ren) attend, I can get it going.  It would be great to have a representative for each school to get us in front of the PTSO or whatever powers that be! For more info, here are a couple of resources:

This week's nutrition lesson comes from the pediatrician Dr. William Sears.  I met him at the Expo, too!  Oh, his presentations were packed with info, I took notes as fast as I could, but definitely need to check out a couple of his books, like "The N.D.D. Book: Nutrition Deficit Disorder Affects Your Child's Learning, Behavior, & Health, and What you Can Do About It".
He cites that many children (and adults) suffer from the "D's" like ADD/ADHD, OCD, BPD, CVD, D-iabetes... but these "disorders" all have their roots in "N.D.D." or "Nutritional Deficiency Disorder!"  He also claims that Alzheimer's Disease (AD) begins at a young age with brain cell death due to poor nutrition, you just don't see the cumulative effects until later in life.  He challenges us all with the following suggestions:

1. Shape young tastes by feeding children real food beginning at the age of 6 mos. old.  Try making your own baby food. Keep them away from processed, packaged, and junk foods.

2. Dr. Bill's "Rule of Two's": Eat TWICE as often, HALF as much, and chew TWICE as long.

3. Stabilize insulin levels.  Eat more fiber, whole grains, and less sugar.

4. Go fish! Eat more fish! The #1 dietary deficiency is EPA/DHA which are found in fish.  They improve heart health, brain development, visual acuity, brain function, asthma, immune function, arthritis, skin and hair health, and decrease inflammation.

5. Give your family an oil change!  Eat more nuts, avocados, fish oils, olive oil, and flax.  Eat less processed oils, "Don't go through the factory!" he says,  leave that for the cars!

6. "The answer to health care is self care!"  That's what he said in two lectures.  Instead of asking your doctor, "What can I take?" ask, "What can I DO?"  And the government isn't going to do it either.

7. Boost your body's own natural immune system by what you eat.
There was more info... but these ones stood out to me the most.  Here's another one of his books: The Healthiest Kid in the Neighborhood: Ten Ways to get Your Family on the Right Nutritional Track"

PRODUCE IN THE NEWS...
Nothing new this week in produce world, other than a halt in produce exported from Chile, which does not affect us at the Farmstand much anyway.  Due to an earthquake, most operations at the ports have shut down.  Their main priority is IMPORTING supplies, vs. exportation of crops.
We're still in that period of transition between the growing regions of Yuma and the Coachella Valley back to the Salinas Valley Region in California some 600 miles north.  Expect to see prices come down on the new harvest out of California growing regions by the second week of April as supplies increase and weather on the east coast warms up so they can start growing their own!
Here's a report on the transition by Simcha Weinstein at Albert's Organics...
"The good news is that the greens benefit from the cooler northern temperatures giving the product a new life of freshness and crispness.  That somewhat tired look that the desert greens have leading into this time of year nicely disappears.  The challenge, however, is getting suppies up to speed during this transition.  With cooler nights and much more rainfall than in the desert, the lettuce in Salinas tends to grow a little slower than we usually hope for.  this is all pretty much standard fare for this time of year; it's just that when this period actually arrives, we all realize that even though we must flow with nature's habits and timeframes, we still want an uninterrupted and continuous flow of product."
As always, we try to bring you the best produce at the best prices available, all year long!

This week Rhonda scored us a great deal on some nice leafy greens like lacinato kale and chard.  We have not seen prices this low in weeks!   Oh, in case you missed them, the tomatoes last week were beautiful so she ardered twice as many!  This week they will be even larger in size, weighing over .6lbs each and at $1.95, will equate to about $3.10/lb.  That's not bad, all things considered!

Back from a timeout on the bench this week, we're expecting some large artichokes, cilantro, fresh basil, and our favorite mini mixed sweet peppers.  Also scheduled to return is the raspberry.  While pricey, some of us just couldn't hang on another week, we had to have 'em!  One of my favorite treats is the "raspberry boat."  I take a raspberry and stuff it with an almond.  Oh the flavors so compliment one another for a healthy antioxidant and nutrient-rich snack!
Our new  Big Berry Tea was a big hit last week so we ordered more, and in addition, we'll have some  "Volcano Blood Orange Juice" from Sicily that we have not seen in a long time.  Yes, this is the pure stuff, no sparkling water added.

We have a couple of new players coming up to bat this season.  To add a little variety, we called in some whipped, salted, organic butter and and some nonfat yogurt in blueberry and strawberry.  Last, but not least, we'll have some roasted sunflower seeds for the first time.

Don't forget to cool off with our Steaz Teas in FOUR flavors this week (great to take out to ballgames or on the boat) and if you need an energy boost, try the new Steaz Energy Drinks.
