Greetings!

We're celebrating Easter this weekend, already!  Time goes by so fast, even while I attempt to slow down some.  Rhonda and the rest of the Merrill family have been such a help up here, I'm so thankful, especially for everybody's patience as we adapt to this transition in farmstand leadership.  It's been such a pleasure lately to work on these newsletters, the cookbook and devotional, and best of all, I love visiting with all of you on Farmstand Fridays!  Rhonda does a great job handling all the behind the scenes duties that took up the majority of my time.  So last week Jim Matthews and I finally went back into production of our "Organic Produce Update" on www.havasuvideonews.com check it out!  You never know what will happen next, eh?

This is Part III in my series on the Natural Products Expo Experience (newsletters are now archived on our website in case you missed anything).  One of my favorite nutrition books is The Encyclopedia of Healing Foods by Michael Murray, N.D.  so when I saw his name on the agenda, this book went in my bag and I found a good seat!  He autographed it for me as we talked afterward.  He wrote, "Live with a passion!!"  Amen!  Live!

Years ago, one of my parents told me, "Bec, you can't save the world!"  Well I may die trying, but it's a passion to share wellness.  Here's a recap of what Dr. Murray shared...

He wrote another book, "What the Drug Companies Won't Tell You and Your Doctor Doesn't Know"  He stated that what's causing the national health care crisis is disease management vs. true health care.  Creating profits vs. better meds with questionable research and marketing practices, the U.S drug industry is the most profitable sector in the business world.  Did you know that the avg. 55 yr. old receives 34.4 prescriptions per year?
Over 90% of research is done by biased, hired clinical research organizations.   The Journal of American Medical Association reported that 95% of studies are falsely documented.  Murray went on to cite many lawsuits and drugs that went awry.
Drug companies spent over $20M/yr marketing to doctors (appr. 50K/yr/Dr.) and over $10 billion/yr. on direct marketing to customer ads.
A couple thousand years ago Hippocrates said, "Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food."  What happened???

In conclusion, Dr. Murray gave us the following
5 Keys to a Life Worth Living:

1. It's important to make a spiritual connection.

2. Take personal responsibility for your health, life, and emotions.

3. Develop a positive mental attitude.  Look for the good in all.

4. Find your passion and engage in activities

5. Create a vehicle in your life that makes a difference in others.

PRODUCE IN THE NEWS...
 ship
They're here!!! Here is a photo of a ship that carries gala apples from New Zealand on the other side of the world where it is Fall season.  Once in a while you have to do whatever it takes to get a fresh product, eh?  Since apples grow in the Fall and it's Spring here, so we're winding down on domestic crops.  U.S. apples have been in controlled atmosphere (CA) storage for quite some time and don't have the same quality they once did.  At this point, only the Fujis remain crispy enough, for my tastebuds anyway!

You might be wondering about the long distance boat ride... 8,000 miles across the world, but consider these interesting facts...
The cargo ship carries about 170,000 containers, what a "carpool!"
Their diesel engines convert over 50% of the energy in the fuel to propulsive energy fed to the propeller.  The very best a truck or car can do is a 12% conversion to the wheels.
Now that's not such a large carbon footprint after all.
Also, keep in mind, this transportation is refrigerated.

We're still in that period of transition between the growing regions.  It should only be a couple more weeks for production to increase as the weather warms up and sunny days grow longer (barring any natural disasters).  Nice lettuce is hard to come by, so we went with the premium Cal-Organic Farms label, guaranteed top quality and worth every penny.

Back from the bench this week, we're expecting some green onions, purple potatoes, sunburst squash, Grateful Harvest Dried Cranberries in the 10oz tubs, and raw cashews (they are so awesome in salads!).  Also, by popular request (yes, we do listen) we'll have some of our Volcano Lemon Burst Juice so you can just squeeze it whenever you need it!
Oh, I think my favorite treat for the past week has been the bottle of Big Berry Tea I brought home.  Just one ounce in a large glass of Perrier on ice made a lovely refreshing cocktail that didn't wipe me out!  That along with those giant raspberries, ummmm.

We have loads of strawberries coming on special this week in both 8.8oz and 1lb pkg sizing so don't hold back!  Expect to see 3 types of salad dressing3 varieties of hummus, and three salsas...mild, medium, and HOT!

One last thing... We are wondering what you folks think about the idea of some organic beef jerky.
We have some samples for test marketing... we need some feedback!
