Greetings !

In honor of the upcoming Earth Day celebration on April 22, we will begin our new "BYOB" Rebate program at the OPG Foothills Farmstand! That means a ten cent rebate to every one of our Produce Pals who brings their own bag or basket to carry home their produce!  While we promote organic produce for health, organic farming also protects the environment.  We can further protect it by reducing waste and the energy it takes to make all those excess bags.  It will save us a little money, too, and we'll pass the savings on to you.
The first Earth Day, April 22, 1970, was the idea of Senator Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin.  Determined to wake up the federal government to the fact that the earth was at risk, he went on a mission to raise awareness about environmental issues and prioritize protection of the environment.  In 1990 Earth Day went global with a huge boost to recycling efforts worldwideIn 2000, Earth day focused on clean energy.
I never thought myself to be much of a "tree hugger", but going to some of the educational programs at the Expo brought me to a heightened awareness of what's going on from an environmental standpoint.  "Oh, the average temperature of the earth only went up by one degree," you might say.  Well if you look at a satellite picture of the earth now compared to one taken even 5-10yrs. ago, the polar ice caps look much smaller.  Where do you think all that extra water goes?  Floods, rising sea levels, and excess moisture in the air.  Warm air holds more water vapor than cold air.  We've had a 25% increase in storms that drop more than 2" at a time which is destructive and no help to farmers. The irony, according to author Bill McKibben, is that only 4% of us produce 25% of the world's carbon dioxide and that 4% is not in the most affected, threatened, poverty-stricken areas such as Bangladesh.
So what can we do and why should we do it if we are not so affected?  The best answer McKibben had was to raise awareness on the global level.  He told us to remember this one thing... the number 350.  Researchers assigned a red line value for how much carbon in the atmosphere is too much.  350ppm. We are now at 390ppm and climbing!
We just need to get active and do our part. McKibben pointed out, changing our lightbulbs is not enough!  So here's to reusable bags and an extra 10 cents in your pocket!

PRODUCE IN THE NEWS...

Our Gala apples arrived safely!  While fresh, flavorful, and beautiful (see the pic) they're still not as crispy as my favorite Fujis. We also have a case of Pink Lady apples coming this week that passed our QC check, they should be nice.
Well they had some rainy conditions in the fields this week that delayed harvest, so we're still seeing some volatile pricing.  However, as usual, we still have some great specials to offer (see below).  Nice lettuce is hard to come by, so we stayed with the premium Cal-Organic Farms label, guaranteed top quality and worth every penny.  We have a case of Boston Red Butter lettuce coming in, my favorite, it holds up well and adds color to the sald bowl!
Back from the bench this week, we're expecting some artichokes, green beans, red cabbage (more colorful salad makin's), eggplant, a variety of fresh herbs, portabella mushrooms, and finally, our fantastic "Organic Girl" Berries and Balsamic Salad Kits...they make a quick easy meal!

Rhonda went berry crazy this week, she's got blackberries, blueberries, raspberries AND strawberries on the way, berry good news! I've never seen such beautiful, tasty berries before the summer season.  Oh, while we're on summer, guess what else she found?  Peaches and plums will be making their season premier this week!

As for new items up to the plate, expect to see some red and white pearl onions, two gluten-free trail mixes, and for the first time ever, this is uncharted territory... organic beef jerkey in original, black pepper, and teriyaki.

We had some cilantro and sunburst squash left from last week, so you'll find that marked down for clearance.
