Greetings!
We will continue our new "BYOB" Rebate program at the OPG Foothills Farmstand this week in honor of the upcoming "EARTH DAY" celebration! That means a ten cent rebate to every one of our Produce Pals who brings their own bag or basket to carry home their produce! "Well it's just a plastic bag" you might say, but consider these facts:
Plastic bags account for a major part of waste in our landfills.
One of the top items that litter our communities is the plastic bag. Due to their light weight, they fly easily in the wind, float along currents in waters, get tangled in trees, poles, etc., and choke wildlife when ingested.
They are made from a non-renewable natural resource: petroleum. It takes about 430,000 gallons of oil to produce 100 million plastic bags and the U.S. goes through 380 billion of them per year!
Now here's a real important one: plastics are hazardous to produce, the pollution from plastic production is harmful to the environment.
Here's why we should care...
According to Dr. Alan Greene from Stanford University, approximately 200 industrial chemicals were found in cord blood samples of newborn babies!
He describes wellness as analogous to a reggae band in which there is a network of instruments and notes all put together to form the music. If one part is not right, the music is not right. Likewise, wellness is a network, even in other species and ecosystems. If they are not well, then we are not well.
125 million Americans, especially children, now face a historically unprecedented rise in chronic disease and illness such as cancer, autism, asthma, birth defects, ADD/ADHD, and learning and developmental disabilities. Credible scientific evidence increasingly points to environmental hazards and household chemicals as causing and contributing to many of these diseases.
"HEALTHY CHILD, HEALTHY WORLD" is leading a movement that educates parents, supports protective policies, and engages communities to make responsible decisions, simple everyday choices, and well-informed lifestyle improvements to create healthy environments where children and families can flourish!

| PRODUCE IN THE NEWS...
It's peachy this week! Yes, the peaches are coming, we are excited to expect the arrival of our first peaches this year! Last week we enjoyed some lovely red plums that were like a step into summer. We have more coming. With a bounty of berries to go along, and tropical fruits like pineapple and mango, it's been like produce heaven!
While the green stuff is still pricey, quality has been excellent, we're just waiting for the supplies to catch up with demand, then our prices will come down. Oh the rainbow chard was so beautiful, I just had to include a picture!
In case you have not tried them yet, the pearl onions are superb! Just think, no leftover hunk of onion to hang around in your fridge, just use the whole thing! They taste great and are available in red or white varieties.
You may have noticed Rhonda has been on a mission to try new things each week, adding many new items to the plate at the farmstand. Going through previously uncharted territory in OPG history, she's doing an exceptional job at meeting your requests, thanks Rhonda!
This week expect to find some organic ricotta cheese and believe it or not... (drum roll please...)by popular demand (and because we have a new type of permit now) she's got free-range eggs scheduled to arrive! |

You'll find many helpful sites just by looking in the "Quick Links" box in the left column of this newsletter.
For our OPG Recipe of the Week, simply click on the corresponding link, you'll get straight to my kitchen! This week Jeannine made her famous "Zucchini and Potato Pancakes", what an awesome side dish! To top it off for dessert, try may "Tofu Cheesecake" recipe. This is a light, no-bake version that substitutes half of the cream cheese with silken tofu. Just don't tell anyone it's there, they'll never know! I tested it on a couple of unsuspecting neighbors and they liked it. Or maybe if you don't like your neighbors... just kidding!
A big "thank you" to all of our Produce Pals who contributed to the OPG cookbook. We are going into formatting mode, getting ready for print. We've been having a lot of fun doing the photography over the past several weeks, playing with our food!
You can learn to "take charge of your nutrition" by watching "Kitchen Nutrition" on
Look for upcoming segments on apple quality, pineapples, and you can watch me go kuku for coconuts as I bust out the tools and break one open. With Organic Produce Gal, you never know what you'll see next!
Now here's another one... To obtain a discount and lots of information on a Vitamix Blender go to www.vitamix.com and enter coupon code #21-000039. There is also a two speed model (Turboblend 4500) that is almost the same as the one on the website, but has a simple low and high speed option vs. 10 speeds (and a much lower price!) This is the model I use... get 'er going, then crank it up 'til smooth! |
