Greetings Tim!

Thursday April 22 is Earth Day, but let us try to do a little something green every day to promote the health of our environment and its future.   So many of you are doing a great job remembering to BYOB (bring your own bags) thank you!
As long as it stays cool enough, I've been trying to walk or ride my horse a little more and drive a little less (or at least do more errands on each trip out).

Speaking of the weather, our Havasu heat is coming soon... that means it's time to start thinking about wearing those swimsuits, are you ready?  Let's go green and get ready for summer by eating more salad!  It's better for our health and for the environment anyway, and as always, we at the Organic Produce Gals Foothills Farmstand are here with a fresh new crop every week to help you with that!  Oh! Don't forget, Mother's Day is May 9 and we have gift certificates available if you would like to bless your Mom with a healthy present.  Just don't make her cook it that day!  For the first time ever in OPG history (we've been having a lot of those lately due to Rhonda's enthusiasm, LOL) we will have some extra special organic RAW REVOLUTION CHOCOLATE BARS, wow!  What will she think of next?
 American Heart Assoc.
While Rhonda and her girls (and Pastor Joe, I like to call him, "Pro Joe!") have been hard at work running the farmstand lately, I've been a busy little bee finishing up the cookbook (at 101 recipes now and ready for print) and here's the best news of all...

On Tuesday afternoon I met with our LHUSD food service team including the Aramark food service director, her assistant, the recipe maker, the buyer, and the LHUSD liason to the state.  The day before I even got to meet the regional rep. from Aramark who came in from Illinois (had to win over the "bean counter")  That's right... it was Produce Gal vs. Aramark and guess what???
It's a miracle... we are on the same team now!  They are committed to making our school lunches healthier and tastier.  It's going to take a lot of dedication, work, and creativity to make it all happen but we will take it one step at a time, starting with a decrease and striving for elimination of these three major "health hazards" found in foods.  The three targets are hydrogenated fats (or trans fatty acids), high fructose corn syrup (bad sugar that increases risk of type II diabetes), and artificial colors/flavors (studies show they decrase attention span and increase disruptive behavior).
Well that's a step in the right direction, eh?  Many of you have asked what you can do to help... it really helps when parents eliminate these ingredients at home as well.  We need to educate our children and set a good exampleStay tuned for more updates... including our KIDS' SUMMER FOOD and EDUCATION PROGRAMS coming to a location near you! Get a head's up on our upcoming Healthy Kids Cooking Contest!  Winners will get their recipes on next year's school lunch menu, amen!

We are looking for local businesses who wish to sponsor or donate products/prizes, etc. in return for ad space that will be seen by thousands of residents.  This is a great cause!

PRODUCE IN THE NEWS...
Not berry good news in the berry dept. this week.  You may have noticed some moisture issues with your strawberries last time, that's because it rained the night before harvest.  Pick them, or have no berries?  Tough call!  Excess moisture affects both quality and flavor, in fact, they normally hold off  watering about 24 hrs prior to harvest for this very reason.  Well nature sometimes takes its own course and we must take what we can get.  This, too, shall pass.  Still looking for increased availability on green stuff.  We don't want anybody to be disappointed by taking the very high priced items off the list altogether (as in the past) so they will be in stock.  Expect to see lower prices as weather and supplies improve.

Not as many types of potatoes on the market at this time, but reds and amazingly the yams and sweet potatoes are abundant (as reflected by competitive pricing).  We want to shed that winter "coat" anyway, so we'll focus on salads (that's Jeannine's lunch in the photo above!)

New to the playing field this week is the jalapeno pepper, oh my!  Things are certainly heating up around here!  We're ready for salsa with our green onions, cilantro, peppers, and even the Roma tomato is back for the occasion, yay!  Don't forget to grab an avocado to go with that!
