Greetings Members!
Oh my, today I realized April is almost over! What a lovely Spring season we've had here in Havasu. Well you know what they say about "April showers bring May..." yeah we have flowers. Just don't touch those pretty purple ones! And the farmers had rain to contend with. Rain is good, however, at times it can be one of those too much of a good thing situations that affect crops and harvesting. Back to my little environmental soapbox... while global warming has only increased our average temperature by one degree, results show a 25% increase in storms that drop more than 2" at a time. This is destructive and does not help the farmers!
Cinco de Mayo is this coming up this week so we'll have lots of goodies for you to make salsa, etc. Check our Recipe of the Week if you need some help with that.
And remember Mother's Day is May 9. We have gift certificates available if you would like to bless your Mom with a healthy present. Just don't make her cook it that day!
Or how about a fruit basket?
I visited our LHUSD food service team again today. Plans are under way to make positive changes to the lunch program, beginning with the addition of ASPARAGUS to the menu! There will be a lunch time food tasting event at Havasupai Elementary School on May 12 so we can introduce the kids to asparagus, cheers! Their other food of the month is watermelon, how cool is that?
On the 11th, Linda, the liason to the state, and I will be attending a grant writing workshop so we can prepare our requests for funding the new menu project. Telling the Produce Gal, "That can't be done" is like an invitation or challenge, so here goes!
I recall a few years back someone said you can't have a produce market in the middle of the desert, LOL.
To help promote nutrition as part of a healthy lifestyle, I'll be on the air tomorrow (Thursday) morning at 8:00am at ALIVE FM with Tracy Yohe, morning show host.
Tune in to 95.9 on your FM radio. We'll have some fun as we discuss the importance of being a good steward of our bodies and listen to some upbeat music.
Call us and say, "Hi!" it would be awesome to hear from you! We usually give out prizes, too... 1-866-999-5934
Stay tuned for more updates... including our KIDS' SUMMER FOOD and EDUCATION PROGRAMS coming to a location near you! Get a head's up on our upcoming Healthy Kids Cooking Contest! Winners will get their recipes on next year's school lunch menu, amen!
We are looking for local businesses who wish to sponsor or donate products/prizes, etc. in return for ad space that will be seen by thousands of residents. This is a great cause!
