Greetings!
Ahhh, so much to celebrate this week...
To those who take care of us, Moms and Nurses, CHEERS!
It's not too late if you would like to bless someone special with a Mother's Day OPG gift certificate. My mother-in-law is coming to town and she just loves our fruit! She'll also get my newfangled healthy strawberry cheesecake. The recipe can be found on our recipe link in the left column.
In honor of Nurse's Week, we're offering a
special 10% off discount this week to all nurses who come with their valid ID and nametag! Since she was the founder of modern nursing, Nurse's week concludes on May 12, Florence Nightengale's birthday.
I looked up some nurse facts...
RN's top the list of the ten occupations with the largest projected job growth in the last ten years.
The nation's nurses rank first for their honesty and integrity with 82% of Americans rating them as "high" or "very high" according to a 2005 Gallup Poll.
A study on the nursing shortage by Linda Aiken of the Univ. of Pennslyvania School of Nursing found that an estimated 20,000 people die each year because they have checked into a hospital with overworked nurses.
Patients run a 31% increased risk of dying from routine surgery if in a hospital with a severe nursing shortage!
So let's give 'em a break! Eat an apple a day or something!
Heart disease and cancer are the top two killers in the U.S. annually.
This week I watched a
DVD called
FOODMATTERS.
You really ARE what you eat.
I tried to post the link to the movie trailer here and on my facebook, but I'm just not that hi-tech! You can see it for yourself at
www.foodmatters.tv
We are planning to hold a free screening of this video in the near future... please let me know if you are interested!
Hippocrates (460-370 BC) said, 'Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.' He laid down the foundations for modern medicine and believed the human body had an innate capacity for self-healing.
Linus Pauling said, 'Optimum nutrition is the medicine of tomorrow.'
Our approach to treating illness has changed...
Surgery and pills vs. change your diet?
Here's a really good one, studies show that you only get about 40% of the nutritional benefit from food that is more than 5 days old. Yikes! Most food travels over 1500-2000 miles before it reaches the stores and is well over 5 days old. Conventionally grown produce comes from deficient and toxic soil, producing deficient, toxic plants that require CHEMICALS to protect them against pests and diseases (since they can no longer protect themselves).
THAT'S WHY WE HAVE OUR FARMSTAND, FOLKS!
Ok, I'll step off my soapbox now...just for the time being...
Now that Rhonda is running the farmstand, I have more time for this stuff, eh?
Don't forget, if any of you have children attending Havasupai Elementary School, there will be a food tasting event at on May 12 so we can introduce the kids to asparagus, cheers!
To help promote nutrition as part of a healthy lifestyle, I'll be on the air on Thursday mornings from 8-10:00am at ALIVE FM with Tracy Yohe, morning show host.
Tune in to 95.9 on your FM radio. We'll have some fun as we discuss the importance of being a good steward of our bodies and listen to some upbeat music.
Call us and say, "Hi!" it would be awesome to hear from you! We usually give out prizes, too...

Be prepared for a trivia question that will come from this newsletter!
Plans are also under way to get our "Kitchen Nutrition" program back on the air so you can actually see how it's done! But we need sponsors to cover production expenses. Your commercials become part of all programs and are subject to multiple air times on TV and internet.
Stay tuned for more updates... including our KIDS' SUMMER FOOD and EDUCATION PROGRAMS coming to a location near you! Get a head's up on our upcoming Healthy Kids Cooking Contest! Winners will get their recipes on next year's school lunch menu, amen!
We are looking for local businesses who wish to sponsor or donate products/prizes, etc. in return for ad space that will be seen by thousands of residents. This is a great cause!
