Greetings Tim!
What an exciting week! Tuesday I went to the grant writing seminar with the LHUSD liason to the state. We're making big plans to solicit additional funding from private natural foods companies to improve the quality of our school lunch food. The Federal gov't is also working on the matter implementing the "Let's Move" campaign.
Wednesday I invited the children of Havasupai Elementary School to sample ASPARAGUS during a special food tasting event at lunch time, encouraging them to "Take up your spear! It makes you healthy and strong!" Cheers to the kids, most of them tried it and many came back for a second helping.
For the remainder of May, we'll focus on FAMILY WELLNESS MONTH, striving for communities to emphasize healthy family lifestyles and habits!
The healthier each family is overall, the healthier we can all be as a whole. One of the best things we can do is to eat dinner together. This provides an excellent opportunity to communicate, listen, and of course, teach table (and model)manners!
It helps to work together as a family to eat healthy, making a grocery list, place your OPG preorder (LOL), and plan a few dinner menus. When children become old enough, encourage them to help with the meal prep and dishes. They, too, will be on their own some day! Oh, my middle child graduates next week and will go off to tech school in June. Bittersweet:)
1. Visit with grandparents or grandkids.
2. Set family goals and share your dreams.
3. Call an estranged family member.
4. Tell family members you love them.
5. Eat dinner together!
6. Remember that your family members are just human, not superhuman, reduce expectations.
7. Be genuine.
Let me know if you have any family wellness ideas to share and they may be in the next OPG News issue!
"No matter what you've done for yourself or humanity, if you can't look back on having given love and attention to your own family, what have you really accomplished?" Lee Iacocca
To help promote nutrition as part of a healthy lifestyle, I'll be on the air on Thursday mornings from 8-10:00am at ALIVE FM with Tracy Yohe, morning show host.
Tune in to 95.9 on your FM radio. We'll have some fun as we discuss the importance of being a good steward of our bodies and listen to some upbeat music.
Call us and say, "Hi!" it would be awesome to hear from you! We usually give out prizes, too... 1-866-999-5934
This week, call in with your idea to promote Family Wellness!

Plans are also under way to get our "Kitchen Nutrition" program back on the air so you can actually see how it's done! But we need sponsors to cover production expenses. Your commercials become part of all programs and are subject to multiple air times on TV and internet.
Stay tuned for more updates... including our KIDS' SUMMER FOOD and EDUCATION PROGRAMS coming to a location near you! Get a head's up on our upcoming Healthy Kids Cooking Contest! Winners will get their recipes on next year's school lunch menu, amen!
We are looking for local businesses who wish to sponsor or donate products/prizes, etc. in return for ad space on our new SCHOOL LUNCH CALENDAR that will be seen by thousands of residents ALL YEAR LONG. This is a great cause!

| PRODUCE IN THE NEWS...
Prices are softening up a bit on the produce market as our Spring crops become more plentiful. Green beans and broccoli are an even better deal this week. We'll continue to offer bagged baby spinach and spring mix to save you some money, just remember it does not stay fresh as long in the bags. You can transfer it to an empty Organic Girl salad container and it will be happier! While mini mixed peppers will not be available for the next 2-3 weeks, we have some lovely jumbo sized bell peppers to take their place, great for stuffing!
Haden mangos are back! With a smooth texture, sweet flavor, and deep orange flesh, they are my personal favorite, packing a whopping 80% of the RDA for vitamin C and 20% RDA for vitamin A. They make a nice refreshing sorbet for dessert.
Another tropical delight coming back is the papaya, known for its antioxidants and digestive enzyme papain.
Next, you asked for it, you got it... fresh sweet white corn is slated for its season opener this week!
We are still waiting on the fresh new crop of gold kiwi from New Zealand, it may be in by next week. Also expect to see another round of fresh seasonal apples coming from across the ocean. Galas are done now, but the Fujis and Pink Ladies are next in the lineup. Fortunately, the domestic varieties hold up well under controlled atmosphere storage, so we don't have to do without. You'll also find some Granny Smith apples back to the plate this week.
We're sticking with the new line of Drew's Salsas (in four varieties!) since they are a better price, very tasty, and have a longer shelf life once purchased. We only have so much room in the cooler and these can be stored on the shelf until opened.
We really need your FEEDBACK on any new items in order to determine what items will go on the shelves... and which ones to cut! Once again, contact Rhonda for product comments or requests.
