Greetings Tim!

This week we're planning to beat the heat with our COOL CROPS!  I don't know about you, but when it's hot, I'm not so much into cooking or even eating big meals.  It's nice to graze on a little refreshing something or other, throw some goodies on the barbie (less dishes, too), and mow lots of salad.  Experts say that we get more nutritional benefit from mostly raw food anyway.  Also, food prep time decreases significantly when all you have to do is chop it up and toss it in a bowl! This leaves plenty of time to enjoy other things in life... or get back in the water!

Last weekend we went boating and I loaded our ice chest with cheese and crackers, homemade kale chips, grapes, baby carrots, and plenty of our refreshing teas to stay cool.
Keep in mind, just because you may be traveling, it's not necessary to do without your OPG fix... with a little creative planning, it's possible to take some along.  Just check out the 49lb suitcase that flew with me to John Lyon's horse ranch in Colorado, LOL.

Now for any of you who have children who like to help out in the kitchen... the LHUSD lunch ladies are looking for entries to their summer kids' cooking contest.  That's right, the lucky winners will receive a prize and have their OWN HEALTHY RECIPE added to the upcoming school lunch menu for next year.  How cool is that?

To help promote nutrition as part of a healthy lifestyle, I'm on the air Thursday mornings from 8-10:00am at ALIVE FM with Tracy Yohe, morning show host.
Tune in to 95.9 on your FM radio.  We'll have some fun as we discuss the importance of being a good steward of our bodies and listen to some upbeat music.
Call us and say, "Hi!" it would be awesome to hear from you! And we ALWAYS  give out prizes...    1-866-999-5934

PRODUCE IN THE NEWS...
Oh finally summer is almost here and with it this week came more "summery" prices on produce, amen!  Weather stabilized into a more typical seasonal pattern, hence, our crop supply is now flourishing.
summer fruit
If you haven't already, now is the time to start stocking up your freezer for frozen smoothie makin's (if you are a smoothie fan, anyway... give it a try!) Years ago they canned everything and stored it in the basement, eh? Well now we know that fresh is best and frozen from fresh is just slightly less nutritious.  You'll thank yourself come December! Yeah, you can find some pricey berries in the late Fall and Winter, but they don't have the same summer flavor.

Back to the plate this time around, expect to see a new crop of yellow onions, red leaf lettuce, fresh ginger, and after what seemed like a very long week off we have raspberries coming back.  Oh how I missed them!  Did you know that out of all the berries we have here, raspberries are the most alkaline?  That's good news if you are keeping track of your pH.
We're also anticiapting the arrival of some packaged dried mangoes.  There was a mango shortage for a while, then they came back, but it took time for them to get dried up and ready for these handy snack packs.  These are great for travel.
