PRODUCE IN THE NEWS...

If you ate one of our nectarines last week, you must have noticed they were a different color inside... surprise, they were WHITE NECTARINES!  No big deal, personally, I prefer the white variety for their softer skin and even tastier flesh.  Years ago, growers actually tossed these snowy-fleshed beauties away as inferior results of cross-breeding different varieties of peaches and nectarines.  Later, in the 1980's, Asian markets demanded fruit with lower tartness and the white peaches and nectarines became popular with growers and connoisseurs for their sweet, luscious flavor, tantalizing fragrance, and novel color!
Genetically, nectarines and peaches (white or yellow) are nearly identical, the major difference being the fuzz, or lack thereof.  Subtly different in flavor, but similar in nutrional profile with the nectarine scoring slightly higher in Vitamin A/Beta carotene levels (white and yellow alike). Take a look at these...

Oh, by the way, in the stone fruit dept did you try one of the DAPPLE PLUOTS? Don't miss out, they are by and far my favorite variety with a dinosaur egg appearance and flavor that is next to none!

Back from a break we are expecting some rainbow chard, green bell peppers (great for stuffing, stir fry, and salads), fresh herb salad, grape cherry tomatoes, apricots, Hass avocados, D'Anjou pears, and drum roll please...
MAUI GOLD PINEAPPLES, they're superb!

New to the farmstand, due to many requests, expect to find some organic bread from Rudi's Bakery in 14 Grain and Colorado Cracked Wheat.

To top it all off, for a special treat, we'll try some Country Choice Organic Chocolate Sandwich Cookies, yum!

PRODUCE GAL UPDATE...

In the news this week, the Natural Foods industry reported a study done by the University of Colorado linking hypertension to a high fructose diet.  They analyzed the diets of 4,528 adults.  Those who consumed high amounts (greater than 74g/day or the equivalent of 2.5 bottles of soda) were most likely to have not just high, but very highly elevated blood pressure.  The American Heart Association recommends restricting sugar intake due to the potential benefit on weight and cardiovascular risk.  Based on this study, it may help with blood pressure as well.  Can you imagine what they might find if they analyzed the diets of most American children and the percentage of our youth with diabetic/prediabetic conditions?

So, with that in mind, let's eat our fresh fruit, drink homemade smoothies, fruit juices, and slushies, and take advantage of our healthy selection of natural juices and drinks that are sweetened with regular cane sugar vs. corn syrup!

American Heart Assoc.  grilled porties n zucs
This week let's take to the BBQ with the portabella mushrooms and zucchini...
Just cut the zucs lengthwise and trim stems off the shrooms.  Spray with olive oil, season with garlic, sea salt (the Garlic Gold Nuggets come in handy here), and any of your favorite herbs such as basil and oregano then grill until slightly tender.  You can even add a little parmesan cheese, too. The porties make a great hamburger alternative or compliment any juicy steak!
