PRODUCE IN THE NEWS...
Summer harvest is in full swing, expect to see another batch of our lovely summer white corn, yum! We have a couple of popular all-stars coming back to the plate this week as they are finally available... look out for the New Zealand Gold Kiwi sporting a bronze-colored edible skin sans the fuzzy hair wrapped around a sweet, succulent, glowing yellow flesh. They're only available for a limited time, you don't want to miss them!
Also returning after a season off is the Kent Mango with its deep orange, smooth flesh, much less fibrous than the Tommy Atkins variety we've seen lately.
Yams, not in peak season, will be taking a week or two off, but we still have Yukon Gold and Jersey Sweet Potatoes for all of our tuber fans.
By special request, we have a case of mini heirloom tomatoes coming in pint sized clamshells. Miniature versions of the large, misshapen multi-hued heirloom tomatoes, these are petite, adorable, delicious, and add a gourmet touch as they compliment any salad. Don't forget about our awesome "Organic Girl" salads that are ready to go in their eco-friendly containers made out of CORN, not plastic. Remember, you can save these containers for handy re-use, they really help keep your homemade salads fresh and work out great to transport potluck food!
In the stone fruit dept. we're offering white nectarines, white "Ice Princess" peaches, and a new "Sweet Treat" pluot.
Once again, we're expecting a nice crop of leafy greens such as romaine lettuce, lacinato kale, and rainbow chard.

PRODUCE GAL UPDATE...
There was quite a buzz in the natural products news this week in regards to the safety of personal care products... or the question thereof as H.R.5786 the Safe Cosmetics Act was introduced to the U.S. House of Representatives on July 20. So what's the big deal and what does it have to do woth organic produce? Well the skin is the largest organ of your body, covering an average of over 3000 square inches of surface area, weighs approx. 6lbs, receives about one-third of all circulating blood, AND IT IS POROUS! That means what you put ON your body can get INTO your body, so if concerned about organic produce, you might take a look at the ingredients in your personal care products.
While the FDA says that potentially harmful chemicals in our products are present at harmless levels, consider that the average woman uses 12 products and the avg. man uses 6 products each day. Also, when combined with other products/chemicals, some of these ingredients interact to become more absorbable and toxic. Researchers have found some of these chemicals present upon analysis of cord blood samples of babies and even urine of small children...yikes!
This proposed legislation is a meaningful effort to give the FDA the teeth, tools, and mandate to protect consumers from harmful products that are widely used. Currently, safety testing is voluntary and controlled by the product manufacturers, hmmmm...
Now here's a Reader's Digest version of a rather long and complicated list of ingredients to avoid...
I found these after extensive research online and interviews with experts in the natural products industry. They were flagged because scientific studies have demonstrated them to cause one or more various health issues such as cancer (especially breast cancer), endocrine system and hormone disruption, skin irritation, hair loss, asthma, reproductive issues, and environmental issues as well. Here are some ingredients to avoid:
Parabens
Sodium Laurel (or Laureth) Sulfate
EDTA
Dioxane
DEA or Diethanolamine
MSG (they put it in these products, too!)
Propylene Glycol
Triclosan and Triclocarbon
PEG compounds aka polyethylene glycol (these are petrochemicals)
Propyl Alcohol

Why did I go to such great lengths on this matter? Due to a combination of stress and exposure to toxic products I assumed to be safe and high quality, a few months ago I lost half of my hair, developed nasty skin rashes on my face, neck, and shoulders (I suspect my hair products), and had breast lump issues. Now you know why I needed help at the farmstand! Good news is thanks to some great new organic products and lots of support, I am now back on track, doing better than ever!
I even went to tour Hugo Naturals in Chatsworth, Calif. last week to see how their products are made. It was like a giant kitchen with a lovely staff of friendly folks lined up at long tables, donned in aprons making stuff and packaging them by hand! Hugo used to grow organic herbs for Albert's Organics! They only use the highest quality organic ingredients that you can EAT and emphasized that if you can't eat it, you should not put it on your body. The cocoa and brown sugar body scrub were particularly tasty! So cheers to Hugo and his wife Debra for their help and hospitality, you're the best! Check them out at www.hugonaturals.com
