PRODUCE IN THE NEWS...
It's time to enjoy an ample supply of Summer crops while they are still available! Remember how boring it gets in the late Fall and Winter when all we can find are apples, bananas, citrus, pears and an occasional tropical fruit from afar? Don't be caught without a freezer stocked with berries and such for your off-season smoothie or dessert making delight. Many items such as berries, peaches, pineapple, mangoes, papayas, and even corn freeze well and can be
kept until they come back in season. Be advised that this is the last week our delicious gold kiwi will be available. It was a short season for them this time around, bummer. Sweet white corn is also on its way out, so stock up and enjoy while it lasts. My favorite way to prepare corn is real simple...just soak in a bucket of water for a few hours and throw it directly on the grill with the husk intact. The corn will steam to perfection inside. Back to the plate after a time out, expect to see some cilantro, green onions, Italian parsley, and even Brussel sprouts. We had some QC problems with the baby carrots and avocados last week, please let us know if you had an issue so we can take care of it. This time around the avos are coming from a new California grower, let us know how you like them. By popular request, look for a couple of new items this week... sliced provolone cheese (that was my request) and buttermilk pancake mix for those dads who are trying to make breakfast interesting!

PRODUCE GAL'S WELLNESS UPDATE...
So how many of you checked the labels on your products after reading the report about the proposed H.R.5786 the Safe Cosmetics Act and list of ingredients to avoid in the news last week? I was hard-pressed to find a toothpaste without sodium laurel(eth) sulfate in it. Let me know if you had any interesting findings or resources, I'd love to hear from you. Just send me an email organicproducegals@hotmail.com
Here's a little recap, remember these two SIMPLE GUIDELINES...
What you put ON your body can get INTO your body (especially since they add absorption enhancing agents).
If you can't eat it, you should not put it on your skin!
It's that simple! If you missed the article, you can find it and others archived in the newsletters section of my website www.organicproducegals.com
This week, let me introduce you to an awesome group of teens (and the Mom who helped them put it all together) I met at the Natural Products Expo. These kids decided to make a difference, let their voices be heard in the community, schools, and even the government, and let us all know what products and practices promote health and sustainablity for future generations.
Teens Turning Green is a national student led movement devoted to education and advocacy around environmentally and socially responsible choices for individuals, schools, communities, and businesses. They seek to identify and eliminate toxic exposures that permeate our lives, often unknowingly, yet threaten public and environmental health. They have a Campaign For Safe Cosmetics, Lunch Project, Green Dorm Toolkit, Project Green Prom, and even a "Dirty Thirty" List of Chemicals to Avoid, wow!
It all started when founder Judy Schils began exploring potential causes for an alarming increase of breast cancer rates, knowing that environmental toxins are one of the leading causes of disease, cancer, birth defects, asthma, and reproductive harm.
You can go to their website www.TeensTurningGreen.org for more info., to donate, sign up for their newsletter, or find out how you can help...like start a chapter in your area!
To help promote NUTRITION and WELLNESS of the body, mind, and spirit, I'm on the air Thursday mornings from 8-10am at ALIVE FM with Tracy Yohe, morning show host. Tune in to 95.9 on your FM radio to hear me razz them about eating healthy and offer a bite of "Nutrition For Your Soul" (You can taste a sample of this on the OPG website www.organicproducegals.com)
We also listen to some upbeat positive alternative music! Call us and say, "Hi!", ask a question, or make a request, it would be awesome to hear from you and we even give out PRIZES!

This week here is a recipe for homemade HUMMUS to dunk all of your favorite veggies in! A large celery stick makes for a great spoon you can use like a shovel to scoop it up, ummm... Start with a can of garbanzo beans (chickpeas) or soak the dried beans yourself. It can be customized with a wide variety of embellishments such as cilantro, parsley, tomato, avocado, and/or bell peppers, get creative!
You can learn to "take charge of your nutrition" by watching "Kitchen Nutrition" on
Now here's another one... To obtain a discount and lots of information on a Vitamix Blender go to www.vitamix.com and enter coupon code #21-000039. There is also a two speed model (Turboblend 4500) that is almost the same as the one on the website, but has a simple low and high speed option vs. 10 speeds (and a much lower price!) This is the model I use... get 'er going, then crank it up 'til smooth!
